Glossary: Referer, Referrer, HTTP Referer, Referer logging
Monday, September 5th, 2005From [Wikipedia]
The referer, or HTTP referer, signifies the webpage which linked to a new page on the Internet. By checking the referer, the new page can see where the request came from. Referer logging is used to allow websites and web servers to identify where people are visiting them from, for promotional or security purposes.
It is also interesting to note that the misspelling of this word, which should properly be “referrer” actually made it into the published WWW specifications and has therefore become the defacto spelling when talking about website referrals.
